Where In The World Is The Tallis Tree Grove?

In 2019 Kolot planted this dogwood tree in honor of our
Rabbi Emerita, Ellen Lippmann.

Read our Kudoboard remembrance of the old and magnificent linden “Tallis Tree” that was felled in March 2024 here.

For many years, Kolot has gathered for a number of in-person events, celebrations, and rituals at the "Tallis Tree," which is near the baseball fields at the southwest end of Prospect Park, not far from the bandshell (GPS location:  40°39'43.7"N 73°58'33.1"W).

In March 2024, our beloved tree, an old and magnificent linden, was felled, and so we have relocated our outdoor offerings to what we are calling the new “Tallis Tree Grove.” If you are familiar with the original Tallis Tree location, know that the new Tallis Tree Grove is within eyeshot—head to the spot you know and you’ll find Kolotniks nearby!

To find the Tallis Tree Grove (see map below), you have two options:

1.  Most direct route (not entirely paved)
Enter the park at Prospect Park West & 11th Street. Walk straight into the park, keeping the Harmony Playground and Lena Horne Bandshell to your left. You will walk through a grassy picnic area that is sloped and not paved. Cross the park’s inner road (West Drive), and turn left onto the paved path. Almost immediately, the Tallis Tree Grove will be on your right, overlooking the outfields between Baseball Field 1 and Baseball Field 2, a few steps off of the paved path onto the grassy area. Look out for Rabbi Ellen Lippman’s dogwood tree (pictured right)—the new Tallis Tree Grove is the shady area just beyond it.

2.  Smoother route (paved)

Enter the park at Prospect Park West & 9th Street. Walk around the Lafayette Memorial and into the park, keeping the Lena Horne Bandshell to your right. Cross the park’s inner road (West Drive), and turn right onto the paved path. After walking about a minute, the Tallis Tree Grove will be on your left a few steps off of the paved path, overlooking the outfields between Baseball Field 1 and Baseball Field 2. If you get to Rabbi Ellen Lippmann’s dogwood tree (pictured left) you’ve gone too far!

Please bring a blanket or lawn chair to sit on. If you need physical assistance getting from Prospect Park West to the tree, contact HaraConnell@kolotchayeinu.org.
